Google Shopping performance depends mainly on feed quality in Merchant Center: descriptive titles, correct categories, clean images and synced price and stock. With an optimized feed, segment products by margin and performance and set ROAS targets per group.
For most online stores, Google Shopping is the channel that drives the most high-intent sales: the customer is already looking for the product and sees the photo, price and store before clicking. But Shopping success is decided before the campaign, in the product feed.
Step 1: a well-configured Merchant Center
- Verify and claim your store's domain.
- Set up shipping, delivery times and return policy.
- Link Merchant Center to your Google Ads account.
- Turn on free listings, which drive traffic at no cost per click.
Step 2: an optimized product feed
The feed is your ad. The attributes with the biggest impact on performance:
| Attribute | Best practice |
|---|---|
| Title | Brand + product type + main attribute (model, color, size) |
| Image | Clean background, no text or watermark, high resolution |
| Category | The most specific Google category possible |
| GTIN | Correct barcode whenever one exists |
| Price and stock | Synced with the site in real time |
| Custom labels | Margin, ABC curve, seasonality, best sellers |
Custom labels are the secret of the strategy: they let you separate products by margin and performance when building campaigns.
Step 3: campaign structure
An efficient structure separates products that behave differently:
- Best sellers: products that already sell well, with their own budget.
- High margin: more flexible ROAS targets to gain volume.
- Low margin: stricter ROAS targets.
- Long tail / no history: a smaller budget for discovery.
This way the algorithm doesn't spend the whole budget on the wrong products.
Step 4: bids and targets by margin
Set each group's target ROAS from its break-even ROAS (1 ÷ contribution margin). Products with a 40% margin can run at a lower ROAS than products with 15%. We explain the calculation in detail in our guide to paid media for e-commerce.
Step 5: continuous optimization
- Review search terms and add irrelevant ones as negatives.
- Improve titles of products with many impressions and few clicks.
- Check Merchant Center diagnostics and disapprovals every week.
- Test Performance Max campaigns in parallel.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Shopping paid?
Shopping ads are pay-per-click. There are also Google's free listings, which show products registered in Merchant Center at no cost per click.
What is the difference between Google Shopping and Performance Max?
Standard Shopping shows products in shopping results with more manual control. Performance Max uses the same feed but serves ads across all Google channels with automated optimization.
Why were my products disapproved in Merchant Center?
The most common causes are price or stock mismatches between feed and site, images with watermarks or text, missing GTINs and shipping or return policies not configured.
